What is Medicare

Medicare is a government program for people over 65. The program is divided into two parts. Part A is hospital insurance. Part B is medical insurance. Most people over 65 are automatically eligible for Part A. For a monthly premium, you can get Part B

WILL MEDICARE PAY FOR A STAY IN THE NURSING HOME?

Yes, but only up to 100 days for a semi-private room. More specifically, for days 1-20, if you have paid up to your yearly Part A deductible, Medicare will pay for all the nursing home cost. For days 21-100, Medicare pays all covered charges except the "coinsurance" amount. This amount goes up every year. For days 101 and beyond, you are on your own.

ARE THERE ANY CONDITIONS THAT MUST BE MET IN ORDER FOR MEDICARE TO PAY FOR MY NURSING HOME STAY?

Yes.

  • You must spend at least three consecutive days in a hospital.
  • You must need skilled nursing care or rehabilitative therapy every day. Custodial Care, such as feeding and clothing, etc., does not count.
  • A doctor must prescribe the skilled nursing care or therapy.
  • You must receive care in a Medicare approved facility.
  • If you are not improving, the coverage ends.
