This itemized list is a good tool for knowing what documents an attorney requires when representing a client in dissolution proceedings:
- Most recent tax return, along with tax returns for the preceding four years of marriage;
- Checking and savings account statements for the calendar year, to date;
- Documentary evidence of the cost of payments for health care insurance;
- Copies of any life insurance policies;
- Copies of most recent statements from any pension plans, IRA accounts, Keough plans, 401(k) plans, or other similar accounts to which you have an interest;
- Copies of any stocks, bonds, or other assets;
- Copies of deeds to any real estate;
- Copies of most recent statements for any debts owed, either individually or jointly;
- Summary of monthly expenditures, including: Housing, utilities, food, clothing, car payments, gasoline, credit cards, insurance payments, loans of any kind, miscellaneous expenses and any other monthly obligations; and
- Pay stubs for calendar year to date for both you and your spouse. Cooperation with your attorney in providing the above-referenced information is important. Be sure to speak with your attorney to know exactly which documents will be required.
The information requested is necessary so that a determination can be made on allocation of debts and assets; and the calculation of child support and maintenance, if applicable.
